Chapter Twelve

I lock eyes with Garrett. “You have to let us reopen the cinema. It’s the only way to get those two boys to sneak back in here.”

“Do you really think they’d try it so soon after getting caught?” Riley asks.

“I think we need to do two things. We need to give Jackson the night off, and we need to talk to those boys.” Jackson can’t be here, and we can’t talk to him first. I don’t want him to know anyone suspects him of lying to the police.

“Chief Decker won’t like me allowing the cinema to reopen right now,” Garrett says. “But let me see if I can persuade him.” He walks out into the hallway to make the call.

“How do you plan to catch the two boys?” Ben asks me.

“We have to offer them a reason to come here. Something like the possibility of winning something if they do.”

“Winning what though? And where would we even come up with a prize?” Riley asks.

It could cause chaos, too, and that would really upset Chief Decker. “Never mind. It was a bad idea.”

“Maybe not,” Riley says. “What if Rumor Robin wrote a column about kids sneaking into the theater and basically made it a challenge?”

“How so?” Ben asks.

“I’ll say that the cinema is reopening despite the ongoing murder investigation, and I’ll mention how many people have been caught trying to sneak in recently. I’ll propose it’s impossible to sneak in at this point and say that anyone who actually pulled it off would deserve a medal.”

“I see. So the prize they’d get for sneaking in would be glory and bragging rights.”

“You got it.” She looks at me. “Do you think they’d take the bait?”

“I think it can’t hurt to try. And we’ll be ready because we know how they’re getting in. Through the janitor’s closet.”

“We can have Garrett stationed there,” Riley says. “On the inside, of course, so he can grab them and question them on the spot.”

“In exchange for not charging them for breaking and entering,” I add.

Riley taps her nose and points to me.

Garrett comes back into the theater. “Chief Decker doesn’t like it, but he’s agreed to allow us to do this.”

“Great because we came up with a plan in your absence,” Riley says.

Two hours later, the cinema is open for business. Garrett called Jackson Santoro himself to tell him that because they are going to have a police presence at the cinema this evening, Jackson should take the night off. According to Garrett, Jackson was happy to have the time off from work. Although, I can’t help wondering if it was the mention of a police presence that was really what made Jackson happy not to be here.

Everyone else shows up for work. Riley stays up front by Jasmine, watching her every move. Ben keeps an eye on William at the concession stand. Garrett told Mr. Berryman that I should be stationed in the hallway double checking ticket stubs. Because that suggestion came from a police detective, Mr.
